What Is Postal Life Insurance (PLI)?

Postal Life Insurance is India's oldest life insurance scheme, run by the Department of Posts since 1884. Unlike private insurers, PLI does not offer market-linked returns - instead it pays a fixed simple reversionary bonus, declared annually per INR 1,000 of sum assured, which accumulates until the policy matures or a claim is made. Because PLI carries a sovereign government guarantee and lower administrative costs, its bonus rates are historically higher than most comparable plans from private insurers.

How to Use This PLI Calculator

  • Select your PLI plan - the applicable bonus rate is applied automatically.

  • Choose your policy term in years.
  • The result panel shows your annual bonus, total bonus accumulated over the term, terminal bonus (for policies of 20 years or more), and total maturity value.

Maturity Value Formula

Annual bonus:
Annual Bonus = (Sum Assured / 1,000) x Bonus Rate
Total accumulated bonus over the policy term:
Total Bonus = Annual Bonus x Policy Term (years)
Terminal bonus (only for policies with a term of 20 years or more):
Terminal Bonus = min( (Sum Assured / 10,000) x 20, 1,000 )
Total maturity value:
Maturity Value = Sum Assured + Total Bonus + Terminal Bonus

Frequently Asked Questions

Does this calculator show my monthly premium?

No. Premium depends on your exact age at entry and the specific plan's actuarial mortality table, which varies significantly by age band. This calculator focuses on the maturity value and bonus accumulation, which can be calculated reliably from the sum assured, term, and official bonus rate. For an exact premium quote, contact India Post or a PLI agent.

What is a simple reversionary bonus?

It is a fixed bonus amount per INR 1,000 of sum assured, declared once a year by the Directorate of Postal Life Insurance based on the actuarial valuation of the insurance fund. Once declared for a year, that bonus is vested and guaranteed, even if future rates change.

What is the terminal bonus and who gets it?

The terminal bonus is a one-time additional payout of INR 20 per INR 10,000 of sum assured, capped at INR 1,000, paid at maturity or claim for Whole Life Assurance and Endowment Assurance policies that have run for 20 years or more.

Can PLI bonus rates change in future years?

Yes, bonus rates are reviewed and declared annually based on the actuarial valuation of the Post Office Life Insurance Fund, and can go up or down. Once a bonus has been declared and credited for a particular year, it remains guaranteed for that year regardless of later revisions.

Who is eligible to buy a PLI policy?

PLI is primarily available to government employees, PSU and autonomous body staff, defence personnel, and certain listed professionals. Residents of rural areas without these occupational qualifications can instead consider Rural Postal Life Insurance (RPLI), a parallel scheme with wider eligibility.

Is PLI better than LIC or private insurers?

PLI generally offers higher bonus rates and lower administrative charges due to its low-cost, government-backed structure, making it attractive for eligible buyers. However, it is restricted to specific occupational categories, so most private-sector employees outside PSUs cannot purchase it directly.

Is this PLI calculator free to use?

Yes, completely free, with no login and no data stored, and works on both mobile and desktop.
