What is a marks percentage calculator?

A marks percentage calculator converts raw marks into a percentage, and optionally into a grade, division/class, and CGPA equivalent — the numbers that actually go on report cards, resumes and college applications. You can enter one combined total, or break it down subject by subject when each subject has a different maximum.

It's built for the way Indian report cards and mark sheets actually work: five or six subjects, each usually out of 100, added up into a percentage, then read against a grading scale or division cut-off.

How to use this calculator

Pick your entry method

Choose "Total marks" if you just have one obtained/maximum pair, or "Subject-wise" to add each subject separately.

Enter your marks

For subject-wise, add a row per subject with marks obtained and that subject's maximum — use "+ Add subject" for more rows.

Check grading options

Optionally adjust the passing percentage or the CGPA conversion factor under "Grading options".

Calculate and share

Tap Calculate to see your percentage, grade, division and CGPA, then download it or share it on WhatsApp.

Formula used, with a worked example

Percentage = (Total marks obtained ÷ Total maximum marks) × 100 CGPA (CBSE-style) = Percentage ÷ 9.5 Percentage from CGPA = CGPA × 9.5

Example: a student scores 82, 76, 88, 91 and 73 out of 100 in five subjects — that's 410 out of 500. Percentage = (410 ÷ 500) × 100 = 82%. On the CBSE-style scale that falls in the A2 band, and 82 ÷ 9.5 gives a CGPA equivalent of roughly 8.6.

Frequently asked questions

How is percentage calculated from marks?

Add up marks obtained across subjects, divide by the total maximum marks, then multiply by 100. For one test, it's simply obtained ÷ total × 100.

How do I convert CGPA to percentage?

Multiply your CGPA by 9.5 (the common CBSE conversion factor) to get an approximate percentage. Some universities use a different factor, like 10 or 9.4 — check your institution's rule.

What is a good percentage in Class 10 or 12?

There's no fixed universal answer, but broadly, 90%+ is considered excellent, 75–90% very good, 60–75% good, and above the passing mark is a pass — competitive courses often expect the higher bands.

What is the CBSE grading system?

A 9-point scale from A1 (91–100%) down to E (below 33%, fail), with each 10-mark band assigned a letter grade and grade point, as shown in the table above.

What percentage is needed to pass in India?

Most Indian boards and universities set the passing mark around 33%, though it can vary — this calculator lets you set your own passing percentage under "Grading options".

What's the difference between distinction, first class and second class?

These are common division cut-offs: distinction is usually 75%+, first class 60–74.9%, second class 50–59.9%, and third class/pass covers the rest above the passing mark — exact cut-offs vary by institution.

Can each subject have a different maximum mark?

Yes — in subject-wise mode, set each subject's own maximum (not just 100), and the calculator sums the marks and maximums correctly before computing the percentage.

Is this calculator free, and is my data stored?

Yes, completely free with no login, and nothing you type is stored or sent anywhere — all calculation happens locally on the page.
