What is an electricity bill calculator?

An electricity bill calculator estimates what you'll owe for a billing cycle before your actual bill arrives. You enter the units you consumed (or your meter readings), tell it your tariff — flat rate or slab-based — and it works out the energy charge, fixed charges, duty, surcharge and any subsidy to give you a total.

It's useful for budgeting, sanity-checking a bill that looks unusually high, comparing tariff plans, or simply understanding why your bill jumps once you cross into a higher slab.

How to use this calculator

Enter your consumption

Type in units consumed directly, or switch to meter readings and enter your previous and current meter values — the units are worked out automatically.

Choose your tariff type

Pick Flat rate if you pay one fixed price per unit, or Slab (tiered) if your rate increases in blocks as your usage rises.

Set your rates

For flat rate, enter the price per unit. For slab rate, edit the sample slab limits and rates to match your own discom's tariff.

Add extra charges

Optionally open "Additional charges" to include fixed/meter charge, electricity duty, fuel surcharge (FPPCA) and any subsidy.

Calculate and share

Tap Calculate to see your full bill breakdown, then download it as a text file or share it on WhatsApp.

Formula used, with a worked example

Energy charge (flat) = Units × Rate per unit Energy charge (slab) = Σ (units in each slab × that slab's rate) Total bill = Energy charge + Fixed charge + Duty + FPPCA − Subsidy

Example: say you used 250 units this month on the default WBSEDCL-style slab rates above. The first 102 units are billed at INR 4.10 (≈INR 418), the next 78 units (103–180) at INR 5.34 (≈INR 417), and the remaining 70 units (181–250) at INR 6.15 (≈INR 431) — an energy charge of roughly INR 1,266. Add an INR 40 fixed/meter charge, and the estimated total comes to about INR 1,306, or roughly INR 5.22 per unit on average. Switch the state selector to your own discom and edit the slab rates to match your latest bill for an accurate figure.

Which states and discoms this covers

Domestic electricity tariffs in India are set state by state, and even within a state, different discoms can charge differently. This calculator lets you pick your state/discom for a starting point, then edit every slab and rate yourself:

StateDiscom(s)
West BengalWBSEDCL (rest of state), CESC (Kolkata)
MaharashtraMSEDCL (Mahavitaran), BEST & Tata Power (Mumbai)
DelhiBSES Rajdhani, BSES Yamuna, Tata Power-DDL

Tamil NaduTANGEDCO
Uttar PradeshUPPCL
GujaratDGVCL, UGVCL, PGVCL, MGVCL
TelanganaTSSPDCL, TSNPDCL
RajasthanJVVNL, AVVNL, JdVVNL

Only the West Bengal (WBSEDCL) preset is prefilled with approximate real slab rates by default, since that's reliably sourced from the 2025-26 WBERC tariff order. For every other state, pick it from the dropdown and enter your own rates from your latest bill — this avoids showing you a number that might not match your actual discom.

Frequently asked questions

How is electricity bill calculated in India?

Most discoms bill domestic users on a slab basis, charging the first block of units at a lower rate and each higher block progressively more, then add fixed charges, duty and surcharge before deducting any subsidy.

What is a slab or tiered tariff?

It splits your total units into ranges, each billed at its own rate — like income tax slabs — so heavier users pay a higher average rate per unit.

What is FPPCA or fuel surcharge?

A variable charge many discoms add to recover changing fuel and power-purchase costs. It's usually a percentage of the energy charge and can change every cycle.

What is electricity duty?

A state government levy on electricity consumption, usually charged as a percentage of the energy charge, separate from what the discom itself charges.

How do I get units from my meter reading?

Switch to "Meter readings" mode and enter your previous and current reading — the calculator subtracts them to get units consumed automatically.

Does this work for my state's discom?

Yes — pick your state/discom from the dropdown. West Bengal (WBSEDCL) comes prefilled with approximate real slab rates; for other states, select yours and enter your own rates from your latest bill, since tariffs differ by state and discom.

Why does my actual bill differ from this estimate?

Real bills can include additional line items — taxes, arrears, meter rent, minimum charges — and your discom's actual slab rates may differ from the sample values shown here.

Do I need to log in or create an account?

No. The calculator works instantly in your browser with no sign-up.

Is this calculator really free, and is my data stored?

Yes, it's completely free to use, and nothing you type — units, readings, or rates — is stored or sent anywhere. All calculation happens locally on the page.

Estimates only — actual bills depend on your discom's exact tariff, applicable taxes, and any arrears or adjustments. Always refer to your official bill for the final amount.
