What is a brick calculator?
A brick calculator is a small tool that works out how many bricks — plus the cement and sand to lay them — a wall will need, based on its length, height and thickness. Instead of counting brick courses by hand or guessing from a previous job, you enter the wall size once and get a ready number to hand to your mason or supplier.
This one is built around the sizes and mortar practices used on Indian sites: modular and traditional brick, thickness measured in inches (4.5", 9", 13.5"), and mortar ratios like 1:4 and 1:6 that most masons already work with.

Formula used, with a worked example
Wall volume = Length × Height × Thickness
Brick volume (with mortar) = (L + joint) × (W + joint) × (H + joint)
Bricks needed = Wall volume ÷ Brick volume (with mortar) × (1 + wastage%)
Mortar volume = Wall volume − (bricks × brick-only volume)
Cement volume = Mortar volume × 1.33 × [1 ÷ (1 + ratio)]
Sand volume = Mortar volume × 1.33 × [ratio ÷ (1 + ratio)]
Example: a 20 ft long, 10 ft high, 9-inch (230 mm) wall, using modular brick (190×90×90 mm), a 10 mm mortar joint, 1:6 mix and 5% wastage.
Wall volume = 6.1 m × 3.05 m × 0.23 m ≈ 4.28 m³. Each brick with its mortar joint takes up 0.2 × 0.1 × 0.1 = 0.002 m³, giving roughly 2,140 bricks before wastage, and about 2,247 bricks after adding 5%. Typical wall thickness in India
Indian masonry is usually specified in brick units: a half-brick (4.5 in / 115 mm) wall for partitions, a one-brick (9 in / 230 mm) wall for load-bearing exterior walls, and a one-and-a-half-brick (13.5 in / 345 mm) wall for boundary or heavy-load walls.

How many bricks are required for a 100 sq ft wall in India?
For a 9-inch wall in modular brick, expect roughly 900–950 bricks per 100 sq ft including normal wastage. A 4.5-inch wall needs about half that. Enter your exact dimensions above for a precise number.
What is the standard size of a brick in India?
The Bureau of Indian Standards defines the modular brick as 190 × 90 × 90 mm, which becomes a 200 × 100 × 100 mm module once a 10 mm mortar joint is added. Many regions still supply the older 228 × 107 × 69 mm size.
How much cement and sand does brickwork need?
For a common 1:6 mix, roughly 0.03 m³ of cement and 0.21 m³ of sand are needed per cubic metre of brickwork. The exact figure shifts with your mortar ratio, joint thickness and wall size — this calculator works it out for you.

For the most accurate result, calculate the full wall first, then work out the brick quantity for each opening and subtract it. The wastage allowance covers small cutting losses, not large openings.
